What can be more fun than learning about the marine environment while surfing in it? This
week long class includes surfing lessons and water safety education with Michael Pless of
M & M Surfing School and hands-on marine biology with Jill Wilcox of Science-2-U.
With Jill and Michael’s combined experience of over 35 years your student will receive the best
in outdoor education while having a blast!
Lab supplies and wetsuit/surfboard rental are included within the cost of the class!
Marine Biology topics for the week
Tides and Waves:
- Moon cycles, wave formation, wind patterns and local bathymetry (bottom of the ocean).
Kelp and phytoplankton:
- Includes plankton and kelp sampling from surfboards.
- What is the function of kelp and other marine plants in the ocean environment?
Local marine life:
- Includes zooplankton, invertebrates, fish and marine mammals.
- Research will be done from the surfboards followed by microscope work in our beach lab.
Shore life:
- Intertidal- zone and shore birds. Specimen I.D., collections, census and more fun labs too!
Pollution:
- What is it? Where do we find it? How do we help prevent it?
- Research and sampling from our surfboards for testing in our beach lab.

Class 1: May 25-29, 2009
Class 2: June 15-19, 2009
Class 3: June 29 - July 3, 2009
Class 4: July 6-10, 2009

Class 7: August 17-21, 2009
Location: Seal Beach (north side of pier - meet in parking lot).
Cost: $325 / week
Registration
$100 advance fee required with tution balance of $225 due by first day of class.
